musician at loveland records:
Paul Motian (b. 1931)
In the case of drummer Paul Motian, the term legendary is no exaggeration – basically he belongs to a category of musicians, who have lead the way for several generations when it comes to defining, not only what jazz is and sounds like, but what it entails to be an artist, expressing musicality as such, freely and independently. During his long and constantly evolving career Motian has played with countless musical authorities and innovators, being part of their groundbreaking approach to the jazz tradition: From the pioneering trio with Bill Evans and Scott LaFaro to working with Coleman Hawkins, Lennie Tristano and Keith Jarret, not to mention his on-going collaboration with Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell, Motian is today acknowledged as one of the most important jazz drummers of all times.
