Chris Speed (b. 1967)

Chris Speed is a New York based saxophone- and clarinet player, mainly performing in various avant-garde ensembles, occupying the different roles of being a sideman, composer, and bandleader. Speed is part of the groundbreaking band Human Feel, also counting Andrew D’Angelo, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Jim Black. Besides, his playing can be heard on a number of releases ranging from free improvisation to rock-inspired, contemporary fusion (with Alas no Axis) and Balkan-influenced folk music (with Pachora). Aside from his personal tone on the tenor saxophone, one of Speed’s great qualities is undoubtedly, the way in which he has revitalized the clarinet as an important and able instrument and brought it back to a modern avant-garde context.
